Back in the distant 90s, when games were still being recorded on discs, Naughty Dog gave the world the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy — that same bright platformer where the fox-like hero in sneakers jumped around levels, carried boxes and teased competitors in the person of Mario. Fun, daring and visually impressive by the standards of its time, Crash became a real calling card of PlayStation. And although Naughty Dog said goodbye to the series, also releasing the cheerful arcade races Crash Team Racing, it was clear: they were aiming for something much bigger.
Then began a long epic. The rights to the franchise migrated from one publisher to another, and each tried to do something of their own — mostly spin-offs, not a continuation of the main story. We did not hear about the real Crash until 2017, when an updated version of the trilogy was released on a wave of nostalgia. Gaming veterans were delighted, but newcomers were faced with the harsh truth of old school — the levels are complex, the design is ruthless.
This remaster flash reminded the world of the charismatic hero again, but it was clear that in order for Crash Bandicoot to truly return, it needed more than just a makeover — it needed a real reboot.

The plot is in the spirit of the series’ traditions — it’s there, but not overdone. Everything starts in a mysterious «time prison» where old acquaintances have ended up: Neo Cortex, Doctor N. Tropy and the insidious mask of Uka-Uka — an evil double of the good-natured Aku-Aku. It is Uka-Uka who arranges the escape of the century, tearing the fabric of reality and opening the doors to the multiverse. Crash alone cannot cope with such a scale of the problem — he will have to assemble a team of talking masks and save the universe again.
The story begins again on the familiar shore of a tropical island. Aku-Aku wakes up the hero with disturbing news, and from the first minutes it is clear: everything is somehow new. It’s not just about the modern engine and cool graphics — the overall style and mood have changed. If earlier Crash Bandicoot seemed like a mix of a family game with the anarchic spirit of the 90s, now it becomes clear: the new part is more focused on a younger audience. True, there is a bit of adult humor too — jokes with a double bottom in the dialogues do their job.
The new visual presentation may seem “too cartoonish”: the enemies are mostly animals, and many characters look like they came out of a chibi anime. But all this is just a wrapper. In fact, It’s About Time amazes with the quality of execution: the levels are huge, albeit linear, the backgrounds are breathtaking, and the attention to detail causes genuine delight. The animations are smooth, the environment is rich — it is clear that the artists gave it their all.
The game takes an example from the third part and again bets on travel through time and space. Each level is like a new universe: today you are jumping on pirate ships, tomorrow you are racing on a dinosaur, and the next day you are fighting aliens. The theme may be repeated, but the design, architecture and atmosphere are always different — these are not just decorations, these are entire worlds. For hardcore players, the developers have a surprise in store — special memory levels, stylized as video tapes. They are truly difficult and require skill, but they also bring a lot of pleasure.

All Playable Characters in Crash Bandicoot 4 and Their Abilities
And it’s not just the artists’ work — the game designers have done a great job, too. At first glance, Crash’s concept is extremely simple: point «A», point «B» and a bunch of traps in between. Run, jump, make mistakes, start over. Everything is extremely clear and almost primitive — at least, that’s how it seems at first. Where is there any room for creativity?
And here’s a surprise. The developers managed to breathe something more into the classics. The platformer unexpectedly turned out to be… cinematic. Although the game is linear, there is no straightforwardness in it. The camera constantly plays with perspective, and the levels force you to climb through the ventilation, then rush along the ceiling of an interstellar ship. Everything is done with such a sense of rhythm that you begin to remember an amusement park — where every meter of the path feels like a whole adventure. You reach the finish line, exhale, lean back in your chair and mentally applaud.
The game manages not to lay out all the cards at once. An hour after the start, it becomes clear that this is just a warm-up. New heroes gradually appear. For example, you can freely switch between Crash and Coco, and then suddenly Tawna bursts in — remember that cheerleader from the first part? Now she has updated her image: her hair is shorter, her skirt is in the closet, but she has a hook in her hands, with which she effectively deals with enemies and clings to distant objects.
Over time, other characters are unlocked, each with their own tricks:
-
Tawna is agile and fast, with a grappling hook that allows her to fight from a distance and maneuver around arenas.
-
Dingodile is a former villain armed with a powerful vacuum cleaner that he can use to hover and suck in boxes.
-
Cortex is now a playable character with a blaster that turns enemies into jelly or stone — and this is not just a joke, but a working tactic.
Such a variety of characters, combined with levels that are different from each other, opens up a whole field for experiments. And the developers have plowed this field to a shine. Throughout the 10-hour campaign (and this is without taking into account additional tasks), the game never ceases to amaze: every 15 minutes you will find something new — be it mechanics, a visual technique or a plot twist. And that is why you do not want this party to end.
Crash Bandicoot 4 Modern Mode and Classic Platforming Perfectly Combined
The fourth part of Crash Bandicoot is as if the old school underwent an upgrade and finally understood how to properly educate the player. It is still a difficult game, but this time it is fair. And, perhaps, the smartest in the entire franchise.
Developers from Toys for Bob took a risk to go further than even Naughty Dog — not in the level of madness, but in inventiveness. Instead of throwing obstacles at the player until exhaustion, they added variety: thanks to new masks, the gameplay was revealed in all its glory. One mask slows down time, another allows you to glide through the air — and now you are not just pressing the jump, but thinking through each maneuver. Jumping through the chaos of falling ice floes, deftly using the slowdown? Absolute pleasure.
And it is also nice that the bugs and minor quibbles from the old parts are a thing of the past. Now you can smash boxes with a whirlwind, without fear of losing fruit. Jumps have become more precise, and Crash finally has a shadow under him — it seems like a small thing, but it has become much more comfortable to play. For the first time in a long time, you don’t blame the controls or the crooked level design — only yourself. And this invigorates, not annoys.
Don’t like to suffer? Please, turn on the “modern” mode. Endless attempts, checkpoints after each death, and you don’t have to worry about boxes at all. This approach is a salvation not only for beginners, but also for those who just want to relax after a hard day. And for those who want a challenge, the game gives it in abundance. Additional quests, hidden crystals, speedruns for a while and skins as a reward — everything for those who want to feel the taste of real victory.
So is the game good? Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is not just a sequel, but a real declaration of love for the genre. If Naughty Dog’s trilogy was playful but uneven, then the fourth part is mature, collected and inspiring. It not only preserved the magic of the original, but did everything to make us fall in love with it all over again. And it proved the main thing: 3D platformers are still alive — you just need a little talent and a desire to surprise.
What surprised me about Crash Bandicoot 4: pros, cons
Toys For Bob seems to have outdone itself. They didn’t just bring back Crash Bandicoot — they gave it a new life. The result is a bright, smart and truly charismatic game in which you can feel both the love for the original and the desire to move forward. This is not just a sequel, it is a holiday for everyone who loves good 3D platformers.
What pleased me:
-
The picture is a sight to behold: the locations seem to have been hand-drawn
-
The voice actors did a great job, the jokes are also spot on in places
-
The levels are not just beautiful, they are interesting, each with its own features
-
The mechanics are surprising — the game does not let you get bored for a second
What disappointed me a little:
-
That same impudence and hooliganism for which we loved the original trilogy is a little lacking. Everything has become a little more correct — and a little calmer
