The Korean Olympic Sports Committee has officially formed a special group to prepare for the upcoming Olympic Esports Games. This large-scale event will be the main stage in the IOC’s plans to capture a digital audience — and South Korea is not going to stay away. CSOC wants not just to participate, but, in fact, to bring this global event to its home, having studied all the chances of holding competitions in the country of morning freshness.

Interestingly, this «landing party» included not only officials from the Ministry of Culture and Sports, but also real industry sharks — experts, academics and representatives of gaming associations. Yoo Seong-min, who heads the committee, says bluntly that it is necessary to erase the boundaries between classical athleticism and gaming. In his opinion, this will help Korean esports to finally gain a foothold on the global Olympus, which looks quite logical.

It is worth considering that the activity of Seoul’s lawmakers has increased dramatically after Saudi Arabia and the IOC terminated their multi-year contract for 12 years. Korea is the cradle of professional gaming, hosting such powerful tournaments as the PUBG Nations Cup and the legendary League of Legends First Stand.

The history of the Olympic Esports Games and the format

In mid-2024, the IOC officially gave the green light to the creation of the OEG, which is, let’s say, a hybrid format that should combine Olympic values with the drive of competitive video games. The idea was born after the success in Singapore, where the esports week format was rolled out in 2023 — cool, right?

The start of the first games, in general, was originally expected in 2025, but the dates have been shifted — now we are focusing on 2027. One of the committee’s main allies is the Esports World Cup Foundation, which will help with the organization of this whole thing. The list of disciplines is still being kept secret, but it will be similar in format to the World Esports Championship — lots of games, lots of drive, and no clarity on the final list of titles, at least for now.

The Evolution of gaming: how the IOC is reshaping the map of global esports

The competitive gaming industry has been frozen in anticipation of tectonic shifts, as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has finally moved from words to deeds. The first ever Olympic esports Games are now officially scheduled for 2027 — the venue will be Riyadh, and this fundamentally changes the rules of the game for every pro. Such a status does not just satisfy the ego of the players, but opens the floodgates for huge investments and an influx of fresh blood, actually rebooting the entire ecosystem from the inside.

The process of recognizing esports as an Olympic sport

At the moment, Olympic recognition is more of a demonstration nature, but hosting the Olympic Esports Games 2027 in Saudi Arabia makes integration into the main program of the Games almost inevitable — great news, really. IOC officials have been searching for the keys to the hearts of young people for a long time, running virtual series since 2021 in disciplines such as baseball or cycling. It is logical that they try to avoid «shooting games» like Counter-Strike, betting on sports simulations, although this, to be honest, causes controversy among hardcore fans.

Global legitimization, however, is in full swing — esports has already been officially recognized as a sport in Sweden, Finland and Russia, where new disciplines have been added to national registries.

Esports as a sport has long been more than just computer games, but grueling workouts, rigorous physical examinations and the most complex strategies, which teams of the Ukrainian Na’VI level prove with their titles on the world stage. There are, of course, barriers like the lack of a unified global federation and the notorious «violence» in titles — this slows down the process — but Saudi Arabia seems to have been able to revive the market after a prolonged «esports winter.» Thanks to their infusions and tournaments with a reach of 1.3 billion views, the industry has received a powerful boost that cannot be stopped along the way.
