On the one hand, Fallen Order abruptly breaks out of the usual line of EA projects, and on the other, it constantly refers to the hits of other studios. But one has only to accept the game for what it is, and it becomes obvious: elements from different genres are intertwined here so successfully that they give rise to an exciting space adventure. And it’s so exciting that it can captivate even those who don’t have much love for Star Wars.
The plot takes place between the third and fourth episodes of the saga. Order No. 66 has already been executed, most of the Jedi have been destroyed, and the surviving Cal Custis is hiding on the industrial planet of Bracka, surviving with hard work. However, it is not possible to hide his abilities for a long time — the inquisitors hunting for apostates are on his trail. And at the moment when it seems that the hero’s path has been interrupted, he is saved by two future allies: the former Jedi Cere, who herself survived the consequences of the order, and the charismatic pilot Griz, the captain of the ship that became their home and base for traveling around the galaxy.
Unfortunately, the fears that arose after the first screenings of the game were partially justified: Cal turned out to be not the most expressive protagonist. Against the background of Cere, Griz, and especially the antagonists — the Second Sister and other inquisitors — he seems too pale. Perhaps it’s not the brightest acting, or maybe it’s the script that doesn’t allow the hero to reveal himself. Emotional scenes with his participation rarely produce the intended effect.
Fortunately, the player is still not allowed to get bored. Cal is accompanied by a charming BD-1 droid, which brings warmth and lightness to the narrative. Each episode with his participation enlivens the screen, adds warmth and helps to keep in touch with a world where danger lurks at every turn.

This intuitively guides the player and makes exploring planets more meaningful.
The only thing that causes a slight disappointment is the contents of most of the hidden chests. They mainly contain cosmetic elements for lightsabers: handles, linings, clutches. There are many details, but it is almost impossible to see them during the battle, which makes the collected jewelry more of a collector’s pleasure than a practical reward. However, for dedicated Star Wars fans who have been imagining the perfect lightsaber for years, such a customization set can become a kind of dream come true. The rest will hunt for chests for the coloring of the ship, the droid assistant and the poncho, simultaneously interacting with the «echoes of the Force.» This technique allows Cal to read the memories hidden in objects and reconstruct the history of the planet — a stylish way to deepen the atmosphere of the world.
Finding secrets is also important for gaining experience. But what’s especially nice is that doing it is exciting in itself. Each niche or hidden route you find brings double benefits: the feeling of immersion increases, and with it the number of points needed to acquire new abilities. Many upgrades significantly improve the combat system, but the game reveals them gradually, synchronizing the progression with the development of Power techniques.
Cal’s main set of techniques is slowing down, pushing, and pulling. They all expend Power that cannot be used thoughtlessly. To restore its supply, you have to engage in battle and strike with a lightsaber. This approach adds tactical depth to the action game: the player constantly balances risk, endurance and space control.
Combat system
Over time, Cal acquires an increasingly impressive set of techniques. He learns how to deliver a series of two powerful blows, hold down several enemies at once with gravity or thrust, knock down large opponents and even throw a lightsaber, turning it into a deadly disk. As the story progresses, other skills are revealed that noticeably enliven the action game. I especially remember the ability to redirect the actions of damaged imperial intelligence droids — it’s frankly pleasant to watch how the enemy’s equipment works against him.
With all the variety of upgrades, the fundamental structure of the combat system remains unchanged and is clearly inspired by the FromSoftware projects. Both participants in the battle have an endurance scale, and dodging, timing, and parrying play a key role. The choice of difficulty level affects not only the strength of the opponent’s attack, but also the width of the «window» for blocks: in the «Story» mode it is quite easy to parry, but at the «Grand Master Jedi» level you will have to react with precision to a fraction of a second. A successful parry breaks the enemy’s defenses, robbing him of stability and opening up the opportunity to launch a series of attacks. The same approach works with stormtrooper blaster shots — you don’t get tired of deflecting them even after dozens of hours, it’s such a rhythmic and recognizable pleasure.
At first glance, another element borrowed from Dark Souls, save points, seems to be no less controversial. However, the combat system is just one of the elements that make Fallen Order a vibrant adventure. The locations here are really multi-level and diverse, so there is almost no sense of repetition. Even if the animations of the hero sometimes look slightly angular, it’s still nice to control Cal: whether it’s fast-paced fights, running along walls, jumping over chasms or swinging on cables. Moving around the world gives you that feeling of freedom that is so valuable in a good adventure game.

It’s really hard to argue with the fact that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order remains within the framework of a big-budget action adventure. The game makes generous use of elements familiar to the genre: snow-white ledges that seem to specifically mark the route; perfectly suspended pipes; bushes located exactly where it is convenient to grab; platforms and columns, as if created solely for the sake of spectacular jumps. Even workbenches for improving the droid are found in the most unexpected places in the galaxy, as if someone had forgotten them there on the way.
But the main question arises: is it important if the result is excellent? Fallen Order turns out to be exactly what fans have been waiting for — a spectacular action game, an exciting adventure and another resounding success for Respawn Entertainment, which convincingly proves that it is capable of creating not only dynamic shooters, but also deep story games.
