Recently, a fresh new product from Cyberwave studio, published with the support of rokaplay and Drillhounds, appeared on Steam, and in just a few days it sold over 250 thousand copies. Such success is not surprising: the project with the ironic name A Game About Digging A Hole turned out to be much more exciting than you might think. At first glance, it is just a simulator of a digger who has to dig endless tunnels in the hope of stumbling upon treasures. But a simple idea in the hands of the developers turned into an exciting and unusual adventure that instantly drew players in.

This game has its own plot — albeit a little crazy, but that’s what hooks you. Imagine: the main character accidentally stumbles upon an ad for a house for sale. Everything would be fine, but along with the house comes a bonus — a treasure of 10,000 dollars is buried somewhere in the yard. Without thinking twice, the character spends all his savings and becomes the new owner of the site. He invests the last money in buying an «uber-device» — an automatic shovel. After that, his account empties to zero, and a cozy lawn for barbecue turns into a field of archaeological excavations.
The gameplay is built on a cycle that draws you in from the first minutes. The shovel runs on a battery, and charging it costs money. And since you have no more money, you will have to find a way to earn money. The solution is simple: dig up useful resources from the ground and sell them through a computer in your own garage. At first, these will be stones and iron (or, as in the not very successful Russian localization — «iron»). But even such simple finds allow you to maintain a balance between excavations and sales. As a result, the player has two main goals: continue the path to the treasure somewhere below and regularly return to the garage to sell the loot, earn some money and recharge the shovel.
Over time, your tool can be improved. A simple shovel gradually turns into a real drill, which works faster and covers more area. Improvements concern not only the device, but also its battery. It is needed not only for excavations, but also for the jetpack, which you will receive quite quickly. At some point, it will become indispensable: without it, it is almost impossible to get out of the depths of the mine back to the garage. Upgrading also applies to the backpack — the more slots, the longer you can dig and the more resources you can carry at a time. And with an upgrade of the jetpack, flights will become longer and more dynamic.
Do not forget about the risks. The hero can suffer from falls, explosions or burns when in contact with the hot lava layers that await at the deep levels. Treatment is also not free and is available in the same garage.
Trust us — your next win starts with a steam free account.
A Game About Digging A Hole — геймплей и особенности
The gameplay is based on a simple but addictive rhythm. You dig the ground, find minerals, fill your backpack to capacity and return to the garage. There, everything you’ve accumulated turns into money, which is spent on the hero’s needs — charging equipment, restoring health or upgrading gadgets. And then down again: digging, mining, selling, upgrading. This cycle is somewhat reminiscent of SteamWorld Dig, only at a calmer, more meditative pace. Gradually, you go deeper and deeper: through loose sand and clay to dense rocks, feeling like you’re descending to the very heart of the planet (although in reality — no deeper than a hundred meters below the surface).
You only have to monitor two main parameters — health and battery charge. It’s dangerous to completely discharge the battery: it simply explodes. Death results in a respawn on the surface and the loss of everything you managed to collect. This is the main penalty for failure, although not the only one.
But the rewards are worth the risk. The deeper you go, the more valuable the resources: first silver, then gold, platinum, and finally sparkling diamonds. Selling these finds significantly speeds up the leveling. However, upgrades are not endless — at some point you will reach maximum development and the funds will have to be spent mainly on consumables: treatment, recharging, dynamite for destroying hard rocks and flashlights, without which it is impossible to navigate in the underground corridors.
The hero also has special devices at his disposal:
-
a search radar detector that shows bags of treasure;
-
a device for determining the depth, indicating boxes with coins.
They work automatically, and thanks to them, mining becomes not only faster, but also more exciting. Coins from found caches are also used — either for new upgrades or for purchasing the necessary equipment. All this is just preparation for the final goal — the search for the very treasure for which the hero bought the house.
Otherwise, the game is unhurried and relaxing. There is no time pressure or constant threat, no hardcore survival tests. It does not overload with unnecessary details and gives exactly what the name promises — A Game About Digging A Hole, a game about how interesting and exciting it is to dig a hole.

Как играть A Game About Digging A Hole for free on Steam via VpeSports
Digging a hole may sound ordinary, almost mundane. Yet in A Game About Digging A Hole, this simple act turns into something strangely profound. With every scoop of earth, you’re not just moving soil — you’re peeling away layers of silence, searching for answers buried deep underground. The world above fades, leaving only the sound of your shovel and the mystery of what lies beneath.
There are no epic gods or legendary warriors here. Instead, you are the lone explorer, carving a path through dirt, sand, clay, and stone. Every descent feels different: sometimes rewarding, sometimes exhausting, but always carrying that irresistible question — what if I dig just a little deeper? This endless rhythm of effort and discovery creates a trance-like flow that keeps pulling you back.
The loop becomes its own story. Dig until your backpack is heavy, climb back to the surface, refuel your strength, and return again to the darkness below. It’s less about winning and more about experiencing that quiet obsession — the urge to see how far you can go.
And the beauty is that you don’t have to pay to experience it. We’ve made the game available completely free, with a smooth and simple setup.
