Frankly speaking, before I met ASKA, I was sure that another familiar «native» from the Valheim school with a slight touch of Nightingale was waiting for me. However, the first hours in the game quickly put everything in its place. Instead of another action-packed adventure about survival in a harsh world, the focus here is on much more thoughtful mechanics — the development of your own Viking settlement, thoughtful base construction and a calm, almost meditative expansion of infrastructure. This approach is unexpectedly captivating and sets the project apart from its genre neighbors. Let’s find out what makes ASKA really interesting.

From the very first minutes, ASKA does not stand on ceremony: a powerful storm throws the hero onto the frozen shore along with a bunch of the same icy settlers and a modest set of primitive tools. From this moment begins a classic for the genre, but still a unique cycle in its own way — to organize the survival of the community in the harsh world of the Vikings. We have to pick up sticks, extract resources, weave ropes, set up the first huts and workshops. Gradually, the modest camp grows into a full-fledged settlement with roads, forges, farms, warehouses and a defense line, where each building affects the economy and further development.
The gameplay is quickly addictive: in ASKA, you almost never have a «free minute». Several priority tasks are constantly displayed on the screen — to expand the village, improve production, strengthen walls, prepare for cold weather, and distribute resources between buildings. And it is important to achieve each goal in time before frost hits or another enemy raid decides to test your defenses. This combination of survival, construction, and planning creates a sense of lively, dynamic gameplay, where the cost of a mistake is felt quite acutely.
In fact, ASKA is much closer to a settlement simulator and urban strategy than to pure «survival». Only you have to manage the village not in the spirit of classic strategies from above, but on behalf of one of the inhabitants, being inside this world. Together with other members of the colony, you drive wooden piles into the mud, bringing resources to the construction site, keep track of food and tools, and think over logistics and routes. There is always a shortage of timber, ore, workers and time — we have to plan development, optimize production, and think about what is more important right now: defense, a field, or a new forge. As a result, the game literally makes you move, does not let you relax for a minute and holds your attention much better than many familiar survival sandboxes.

Combat system in ASKA
Although the ASKA combat system cannot be called a central element, it still plays an important role in the overall gameplay balance. Your settlement is periodically attacked at night, and sometimes it’s not just small gangs, but serious opponents who can destroy buildings that you’ve been working on for days in a couple of blows. Therefore, the excitement inevitably turns on in fights, even though the fight itself still feels damp. The AI of the settlers is noticeably lost in the bustle of skirmishes, the enemies are sometimes strangely calibrated in strength, but protecting the village still becomes an important part of the game cycle. Without it, the feeling of fragility would disappear, the very sense of risk that makes survival more stressful.
Turning to the visual part, ASKA pleasantly surprises with the atmosphere and attention to detail. The buildings, made in the style of Scandinavian villages, harmoniously fit into the natural landscape, and the settlement gradually comes to life, turning from a pile of logs into a majestic Viking farm with plausible architecture. The developers emphasize that they were inspired by the data of experimental archeology, striving to convey the original way of life and elements of early construction, and this is felt in every hut, barn and forge.
But along with the advantages, ASKA also shows noticeable roughness. The main one is the overly intrusive grind, which gets tired quickly on its own. You collect a hundred sticks, craft ropes, and immediately have to repeat this cycle again, as if caught in an endless routine. It seems that the game feels much more comfortable in a cooperative, where the load is distributed among the players.
Additionally, the situation is complicated by the behavior of NPCs and a number of technical limitations. In short, the problem areas look like this:
-
Settlers often quit their jobs or wander aimlessly around the camp;
-
Most of the heavy tasks fall on the player instead of being distributed among NPCs;
-
Inventory gets clogged up quickly due to limited slots;
-
The interaction menu is cumbersome and sometimes unintuitive;
-
Working with objects can be inconvenient due to an unsettled interface.
-
It should be understood that these are typical features of early access — such things are usually actively fixed as updates occur.
However, there is one detail in ASKA that sets it apart from other survival and colony building games. The settlers here are not just faceless workers. Everyone has a name, personality traits, and preferences. And when someone leaves the community or is killed in battle, you feel a real loss: as if a small part of your world is collapsing. As the village grows and turns into a full-fledged town, this system promises to open up even more, adding emotional depth and forming unique stories that are born right during gameplay.
