We first noticed He Is Coming back during the Steam festival “Games Will Be” — and it immediately became clear that this was not just another indie novelty. The game surprised us with its freedom of choice and unconventional ways of passing. Yes, it was hard to call it ideal back then: the rough edges were obvious. Since then, the project has reached early access and has noticeably grown in terms of features and content. However, along with new opportunities came old problems — they are still with us.

In a world full of magic and ancient secrets, people have long been waging an endless war with monsters. Once upon a time, the Demon Lord took possession of a magical crown that grants unlimited power — and almost destroyed all life. Then he was stopped, but it was only a temporary triumph. Years later, evil raised its head again: the same Lord again got hold of the artifact and is ready to try again to subjugate the world. Now everything depends on the new hero — it is you who will have to enter the battle for the fate of the world.
The choice of path is yours. One of the game modes — “New King” — offers to accumulate strength, preparing for a duel with a formidable knight armed with a set of powerful artifacts. However, not everyone will like such a measured pace — after all, it is much more fun to fight monsters in the wild, where danger lurks behind every bush.
Monster fights take place in different biomes, and the first of them will be the forest — gloomy and alive, inhabited by wild creatures. Here are just a few of them:
-
Bears easily crush armor with their paws.
-
Wolves become especially ferocious if you are already wounded.
-
Spiders use your slowness, dealing damage when you hesitate.
-
Bats feed on your blood.
-
Hedgehogs release spikes, wounding the enemy who dared to attack.
-
Crows are not averse to grabbing some gold from your pockets during an attack.
For defeating these creatures, you will receive gold — it can be spent at the merchant on useful things. But do not thoughtlessly rush at everything that moves in the forest: losses in such battles can weaken you before really serious trials.

Gameplay He is Coming
You have only a few game days before the main boss appears, and every action you take during this time is critical. During the day, the world around you is relatively safe: you can calmly explore the map, look into chests and collect resources. But with the onset of night, the situation changes dramatically. Visibility drops, familiar icons on the map turn into mysterious question marks, and wild animals begin to actively hunt the hero. At this time, it is especially important to find a fire — they not only warm you up, but also restore health, which can save your life in the most difficult moments.
Each item found in chests enhances the character’s stats. If you find two identical items, they can be combined with a special golem into a gold item — this not only saves precious inventory space, but also increases the effectiveness of equipment. And if you are lucky enough to find two gold items of the same type, you can create a rare diamond version — the most powerful and at the same time allows you to free up even more space. The only problem is that the golems themselves appear extremely rarely. Sometimes they appear near fast travel points, but such coincidences are very rare. And the teleports themselves are inconveniently located and do not cover the entire map, so it takes a lot of time to find a suitable golem.
In addition to regular items, there are also special ones:
-
Blood artifacts steal health from enemies, restoring yours;
-
Water ones temporarily freeze the hero or enemy, reducing the maximum attack power;
-
Spiked items automatically deal damage to enemy attacks;
-
Bombs act before the start of the battle, instantly weakening enemies.
Such items can be profitably combined, and their effect can be enhanced by buying special modifiers from merchants. They often have rare weapons that work perfectly in tandem with bombs, poison or spikes.
The developers also added several new points of interest:
-
The well gives out a random item for a fee — you can hit the jackpot, or you can get trash;
-
The Hive produces valuable honey, but is guarded by formidable bears;
-
The Fairy Queen exchanges all items for random ones. Hoping for luck here is risky — for example, I got a bunch of useless things.
The random loot generation system, unfortunately, sometimes interferes with planning. If you are building a build for a specific tactic, there is no guarantee that the necessary items will even appear. This reduces the motivation for experimentation and creativity. I would like the final version to encourage interesting approaches and improve the chance of dropping suitable items. Boss battles are a special challenge. Each of them has unique mechanics and requires a specific approach. Defeating a boss increases the maximum inventory volume, which is important for long-term survival, but also strengthens regular enemies on the map. Among the new bosses, the Frost Druid stands out — he gradually reduces your attack, forcing you to build a battle on patience and defense.
But the real nightmare is the Leshy. He became famous as one of the most difficult enemies in the demo version. At first, you have the first phase, where everything seems quite ordinary, but as soon as the second one starts, the game changes dramatically. Leshy gets a huge amount of health and becomes stronger with each turn. Speed, creativity, builds — all this loses its meaning. As a result, the fight turns into a series of rough attacks, and only pumped up damage and armor saves. I spent eight hours fighting him. And I won solely due to stubbornness. After defeating Leshy, you will gain access to a new biome — a swamp, where the usual rules stop working. Enemies there are more of a hindrance and mischief than just causing direct damage.
The items in the swamp are also different: many apply poison or acid, causing damage over time. Some become stronger only after killing a certain boss — that is, they need to be found in advance, before the key battle. The swamp is divided into islands, and movement between them occurs through the ferryman. Each island is unique: somewhere you will find a new golem, somewhere — useful upgrades. Sometimes you can find an underground tunnel, in which gold is literally scattered under your feet. But along with it, serious security awaits you, and it is better not to go there without good preparation.
Why He Is Coming Stands Out — And What Still Needs Fixing
From the very first minutes, it immerses you in an atmosphere of intense survival, where each run turns into an unpredictable adventure. A huge selection of items and possible builds makes each attempt unique — you never know what will happen next time. I was especially pleased with the new biome: it not only diversifies the visuals and environment, but really changes the style of the game, forcing you to adapt to new conditions and make unconventional decisions.
However, despite its strengths, the game also has problems that are difficult to ignore. The balance feels raw — some items appear too rarely, while others, on the contrary, are too influential. Moving around the map is sometimes annoying: navigation is inconvenient, and the path to the desired point can turn into a dull routine. All this gets exhausting over time — repeated runs begin to seem monotonous and lose some of their original charm.
What is especially offensive is that quite a lot of time has passed since the release of the demo version, but serious improvements are not yet visible. And yet, the game feels like more than just «another project with potential.» It has soul, interesting ideas, and obvious effort from the developers. I want to believe that they will continue to work on the project, refine the mechanics, polish the details, and turn He Is Coming into a truly outstanding roguelike.
