At first glance, Maneater gives the impression of an almost perfect gamer’s dream: after all, where else will you be allowed to take control of a real shark and go free swimming? The game generously throws up opportunities for chaotic fun — sometimes you flash among the channels overgrown with reeds, hunting small fish, then suddenly you jump out onto a sunny beach, causing panic among vacationers and enjoying the predatory drive.
However, this vivid picture hides a less deep gameplay. Under the layer of dynamic action and atmospheric marine «freedom», it is found that the content is exhausted much faster than you would expect from such an adventure. Read more in our review about how well the expectations are justified and what really awaits the players during the passage.

Maneater Free Steam Account
Since the announcement, Maneater has instantly become the focus of attention for players who are tired of the same type of shooters and have long been hungry for really fresh ideas. There are enough projects in the industry where we are repeatedly asked to shoot at enemies — whether they are humans, robots or fantastic creatures. But here’s an opportunity to personally try on the role of a predatory shark, freely ploughing coastal waters and causing a bloody commotion even on the shore — such a concept has surprisingly never been attempted before, despite its obvious potential.
This bold experiment looked perfect on paper, but the reality turned out to be more complicated. It seems that it was clear to other studios that such an unusual gameplay could face serious barriers. The same difficulties as expected eventually became a stumbling block for the Tripwire developers, who failed to fully unlock the possibilities of the idea and give the game the depth that fans of the original adventures expected.

Maneater Plot
The Maneater opens with a small but vivid prologue that literally sets the tone for the entire subsequent adventure. The focus is on two key figures. The first character is the ruthless hunter Pete, a man who devoted his life to destroying sharks and turned his craft into a television show. The channel’s branded screensavers, pop-up hashtags and deliberately cheerful comments from the presenter flash on the screen every now and then, creating an atmosphere of a low-grade but fascinating reality show.
The second character is the shark itself, which is briefly controlled at the beginning before Pete coolly kills it. And then the main plot hook becomes clear: the murdered female was pregnant. The hunter throws her cub back into the sea, considering it too small a trophy. «When you grow up, then we’ll talk.» A mistake that will cost him dearly.…
It is this tiny offspring that the player will have to raise. For about eight hours, we watch as the weak little girl gradually turns into a terrifying marine predator. Development is based on the principles of a classic RPG: we complete missions, upgrade skills, gain new levels, unlock fresh abilities and evolutionary stages. However, there is a caveat — the development ceiling is limited to level 30, and it can be reached long before the end of the story campaign, which slightly blurs the feeling of progress.
The open world of Maneater is divided into several large regions. They are available from the very beginning, but the game gently pushes us to study them in order — this makes it easier to move through the story, open underwater caves for quick movement and not prematurely encounter elite predators capable of tearing us apart in a couple of bites. Each region offers a set of basic tasks and a whole bunch of secondary ones. It is not necessary to perform side effects — it is enough to complete key missions to advance through the story and open new zones.
And what can a shark do? Exactly what you would expect from a marine predator: bite, tear, devour everything that moves. Accordingly, the tasks are often reduced to straightforward action: destroy 10 catfish, eat 12 turtles or snack on 15 bathers. The formula repeats from location to location, only gradually changing the types of prey. In the later areas, instead of catfish, you will have to hunt seals, but with people, everything remains the same — the beaches are crowded with vacationers, and you are slaughtering over and over again. It’s especially funny when the game offers two identical tasks in a row, but sends them to opposite points on the map.
Combat Process: Why the System Gets Tired Quickly
There are indeed attempts to dilute the routine of a marine predator in Maneater: the developers have added «legendary» opponents — especially tenacious creatures that cannot be defeated with two bites, as well as a huge number of collectibles. The player finds everything from discarded license plates to chests and local attractions, which adds a dash of gambling to the secret hunt. But despite these small touches, the game gets boring surprisingly quickly. The start seems cheerful — of course, it’s not every day that we are offered to take on the role of a killer shark and terrorize the beaches. However, after some thirty minutes, it becomes obvious that one original idea is not enough to keep your attention for a long time.
The main disappointment lies in the combat system, which hardly develops as you progress. The whole «action» boils down to three actions: bite, dodge, and jerk. It doesn’t matter if you’re tearing the flesh of a vacationer, pushing aside armed hunters’ boats, or grappling with a crocodile — the approach is always the same, without dynamics or depth. In addition, frequent pressing of the R2 button, which is responsible for bites, quickly tires — especially during long sessions. It would be much more convenient if the management were distributed differently.
To add a bit of variety, the authors adapted the hunter mechanics based on the mercenary system from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. There are a total of ten elite pursuers in the game, each of whom appears as your «notoriety» grows. We’ve eaten a dozen tourists, and the first squad will come running with guns. Several boats were destroyed — a cooler hunter will appear, already on an armored boat. Destroy it and you will receive a piece of equipment and an increase in the alarm level. Then the cycle repeats again. And yes, it’s so monotonous that to call it boring is an understatement.
But the equipment itself in the Maneater is one of the few really interesting mechanics. For completing missions, collecting collections and destroying hunters, you are given sets of modifications that change the appearance and characteristics of your shark. You can stun victims with electric shocks (almost like a sea ramp), reduce damage, and transform into a «shadow form» that slows down time and envelops opponents in a poisonous aura. These improvements significantly affect the gameplay: they accelerate jerks, increase bite force, and allow you to jump higher out of the water — that is, they really affect your hunting style, rather than serving as a decorative function.
In addition, each piece of equipment can be upgraded to the fifth level, making it much more effective. At the same time, there is no shortage of resources — the local currency, nutrients, literally rains down on the player. They are given for every catfish or person eaten, for a blown-up boat, and especially a lot in containers that are easy to detect with the help of an echo sounder issued at the very beginning of the game. It shows what resources a particular representative of the fauna is hiding, but it is almost never necessary to specifically hunt for specific species — the underwater world is already teeming with prey.
Pros and cons of Maneater
However, it is better to take Maneater in a dosed manner — in small portions and with pauses. If you try to run through the plot «in one gulp», the game quickly begins to tire with its predictable action. But the idea is great: the atmosphere is saturated, the water pulsates with life, the underwater spaces are diverse, and even abandoned water pipes turn out to be unexpectedly fascinating for research. Perhaps the game should be treated the same way as a TV show about predators: it’s hard to watch the whole season in a row, but one episode a day is quite ideal.
