There are many different approaches to creating games based on books. Some studios take the easy way out: they take the plot almost unchanged, polish it slightly, and deliver a product designed solely to appeal to the nostalgia and devotion of fans. Others approach the matter with ambition: they use only the atmosphere and characters of the literary source material, and write the script from scratch-with fresh dialogue, unexpected plot twists, and endings capable of surprising even the most seasoned player. This approach requires far more skill: after all, the writing team must create a story no less gripping than that of a classic, be it Arthur Conan Doyle or another great author.
Frogwares is one of those studios that strives to take the latter approach. Their Sherlock Holmes adventure games have repeatedly received acclaim, and expectations for their new project, The Testament of Sherlock Holmes, were especially high. This time, the developers hinted that they’re not limiting themselves to the typical quest genre, but intend to explore the RPG and action genres, striving not only to catch up with, but also to surpass, the gaming industry’s heavyweights.

The first minutes of the game, to be honest, are not very exciting. Strange three-dimensional children appear on the screen, who make their way to the attic, where they find dusty puppets and an old diary. It turns out that these are the notes of Dr. Watson himself. The guys start reading, and we involuntarily wince: the graphics, to put it mildly, are far from modern standards and are unlikely to make an impression.
But as soon as the plot moves to the main line, the situation changes noticeably. An elegant Sherlock Holmes in a top hat and his faithful companion, the mustachioed Watson, appear on the scene. The camera can now be controlled freely, and the three-dimensionality feels quite decent. The interiors and surroundings may not look as cinematic as in the conventional Heavy Rain, but they definitely don’t repel. It seems that the developers just didn’t work out with the models of the children, but the rest is done on the level.
Even the training stage in the game does not get out of the story. Instead of a boring and routine «preamble,» he is organically woven into the narrative, setting the right rhythm and atmosphere for the investigation.
The first mystery that Sherlock and Watson have to face is the disappearance of the Marquis’ precious necklace. Holmes solves this problem with trademark ease, without leaving the room where the crime occurred. The jewelry is returned to the owner, but the next morning the shocking truth is revealed: a fake is found in the safe, and it is so crude that it becomes clear that someone wanted to expose the great detective in an unfavorable light.
The press immediately gets down to business. Journalist O’farley repeatedly publishes accusatory articles in an attempt to destroy Holmes’ reputation. At the same time, the detective, along with Watson, takes on a new case — the brutal murder of a bishop who was subjected to terrible tortures before his death. Plunging deeper into the tangle of mysteries, Sherlock makes incredible discoveries step by step. But it is at this moment that Scotland Yard begins to suspect him, and now the genius of deduction must not only solve the mystery, but also prove his own innocence.

How does an investigation work in a Sherlock Holmes game?
The game’s plot is no worse than the classic Conan Doyle stories, familiar to many since childhood. In addition to the main mystery, which gradually unfolds as you progress, we are literally surrounded by local secrets at every turn. And sometimes they turn out to be very sensitive. For example, somewhere it turns out that a respected clergyman has been having a secret affair with a woman for a long time and is even raising a child with her. In another episode, a pretty girl finds herself «in an interesting position» even before marriage. And there will be so many murders and suspects that at some point almost every character you meet will be under suspicion, including Holmes himself. And the most fascinating thing is that insignificant details suddenly become key, and what seemed important turns into a false trail and leads us to a dead end.
These plot twists are presented so authentically that at times one gets the impression that we are really reading a new Sherlock Holmes story, rather than playing a modern interpretation created by talented followers of Doyle.
The investigation process itself falls entirely on the shoulders of the player. We don’t just look for clues and solve puzzles — we build our own logical chains, draw conclusions and verify guesses. In the books, Holmes impressed with the ability to rely only on a phenomenal memory, but the developers sensibly assumed that modern players would need a tool. This is how special deductive tables came into play: the faithful Watson carefully writes the facts into a notebook, and Holmes builds hypotheses based on them. At each stage, we are offered three possible statements, from which we need to choose the right one — it will become the foundation for the next step of the investigation.
The idea of tables works great and adds a special «zest» to the game. But it is worth admitting that there is no genuine non-linearity here: the final conclusions must coincide with the pre-prescribed logic of the plot. Only in this case the chain will turn green and confirm the correctness of our thinking.
There were also some controversial points. Sometimes the difference between the options is formulated too conditionally — like «the dogs were poisoned» or «someone put poison in the dogs.» Obviously, both options mean the same thing, but only one is considered correct. In addition, there are mistakes in the Russian localization that seriously spoil the impression. When a phrase implying «a man attacked his dogs in a rage» turns into a dry «a man mistreated dogs» — the atmosphere noticeably loses its strength. Such errors are only regrettable and remind us that we still have big problems with high-quality translation of games.
Gameplay and plot in The Testament of Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes in The Testament of Sherlock Holmes is not limited to dry deductions. In between investigations, he rushes around London, from the slums of Whitechapel to respectable mansions, collects evidence, conducts conversations with a variety of people and sometimes demonstrates less than impeccable working methods. In the interpretation of Frogwares, the detective is shown as a man whose moral guidelines are very shaky: he can resort to blackmail, intimidate a child, deftly deceive an interlocutor or humiliate a devoted Watson much more harshly than Conan Doyle’s hero allowed himself.
But this dark side does not prevent him from exploring every corner of the world with passion, finding hiding places, boxes and mysterious caskets. They are the reason for a lot of puzzles. Players are invited to walk a knight across the entire chessboard, escape from the classic maze with traps, or set up an interweaving of electrical wires. Whether you want to rack your brain or just click «rewind» — the choice is yours, although the game does not give up immediately and forces you to be smart.
Frogwares has managed to find a balance between old-school challenges and modern «casual». The illumination of key objects here is implemented in the form of «intuition»: it can be turned on not only by Holmes, but also by Watson or even by the faithful dog Toby. The sixth sense highlights only one object and takes time to recover, so you can’t blindly rely on it. But at times when you’re stuck and don’t know what to look at next, this feature saves you from the dreary «pixel hunting».
The characters regularly return to Baker Street to collate the evidence. And here the player will find a full-fledged laboratory of the 19th century. It can mix reagents, test unknown substances, study blood, soil, and even the remains of victims. These scenes are far from for the faint of heart: the game is lavishly strewn with pools of blood, mutilated bodies, and grim sketches of London slum life — poverty, filth, and despair frame every investigation.
The developers paid special attention to the details. London here is a huge multi-layered system where every face is unique. You will meet the owner of an opium den in Whitechapel, a troubled relative of the bishop, random passers-by and dozens of other characters. All of them are interconnected, forming a plot canvas that can be compared in depth and saturation with a real novel.
The Testament of Sherlock Holmes is one of the best Sherlock Holmes games.
Creating a truly high-quality detective adventure is no easy task. It requires striking a delicate balance: a dynamic, engaging storyline, on the one hand, and meticulous detail on the other, without which the investigation loses depth and credibility. And when the game is based on a cult literary work, the difficulty level automatically doubles.
Frogwares Studios has succeeded in achieving both. Their project, The Testament of Sherlock Holmes, not only preserves the atmosphere of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s works but also seamlessly conveys it in an interactive format. We’re sure the classic author himself would appreciate this effort, as the game carefully conveys the spirit of his stories into the virtual world. We, for our part, can only be grateful to have the opportunity to experience this adaptation.
